UCSF is the home of Northern California's first comprehensive epilepsy surgery program for adults and children. The neurosurgical faculty of the Epilepsy Surgery Program work in conjunction with the Northern California Comprehensive Epilepsy Center based in UCSF's Department of Neurology. Surgical procedures for epilepsy include placement of intracranial recording electrodes or subdural recording grids, temporal lobectomy, hemispherectomy, extratemporal resections, resection of other brain lesions associated with medically refractory epilepsy, and placement of vagus nerve stimulators. Dr. Nicholas Barbaro, Director of the Epilepsy Program, is principal investigator of a new multicenter study of the radiosurgical treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy.
