An endowed fund is a fund whose principal remains intact while each year an annual pay out is made in accordance with the donor's wishes. The portion of the capital appreciation that is not paid out is reinvested in the principal of the fund. In this way, the real value of the fund grows over time and provides ever-increasing support for the program designated by the donor.
An endowed fund enables a donor to remain close to the benefiting program and share in its milestones. Because of their permanence and honorary nature, endowed funds often create significant emotional rewards through successive generations of a family. Because endowments support faculty who are considered leaders in their fields, they create an environment of high quality and scientific vision, in addition to the prestige shared by the holder, the donor and the University.*
