Grand Rounds. Conducted every Thursday (excluding the last Thursday of the month). Neurosurgery Grand Rounds are conducted with presentation of a neurosurgical topic organized by the Chief Resident and a Neurosurgery Working Conference with case presentations. The conference is followed by the Neuroradiology Grand Rounds case presentation.
Biostatistics Conference. Held on the 2nd Thursday of alternating months.
Cerebrovascular Conference. Held weekly on Wednesdays, in collaboration with the UCSF Center for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease.
Cerebrovascular Case Conference. Held twice monthly on Thursdays and conducted by faculty of the UCSF Stroke Service, with collaboration between the Neurology Department and Neurological Surgery.
Clinical and Basic Neurosciences Lecture Series. Held weekly on Thursdays, this series covers pertinent topics in both areas with lectures given by basic scientists and physicians from UCSF, as well as specialists in biostatistics and biomedical reporting and publication.
Epilepsy Case Conference. Held monthly on a Thursday, this is a multidisciplinary conference conducted by members of the Neurology and Neurosurgery departments.
Journal Club. Held monthly on a Wednesday, this discussion of the biomedical literature is conducted by rotating members of the faculty.
Morbidity and Mortality Conferences are held once each month on a Thursday in place of Grand Rounds. This conference includes a discussion of cases from the UCSF, SFGH, and SFVAMC hospitals.
Movement Disorders Conference. Held on the last Thursday of the month, at a rotating location.
Nerve Injury Conference. Held the first and third Tuesdays of the month, in the Neurosurgery clinic.
Neuro-Oncology/Neuropathology Conference. This conference is held every Tuesday to review current cases. A Neuro-Oncology Case Conference is held monthly.
Neuroradiology Grand Rounds. Held weekly on Thursdays. Neurosurgery residents are expected to attend neuroradiology Grand Rounds.
Neuroradiology Spine Conference. Held on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Wednesday of the month, this conference is conducted by Drs. Philip Weinstein and Lawrence Pitts of the Neurological Surgery faculty and Dr. William Dillon of the Neuroradiology faculty.
Neurosurgery/Orthopedics Spine Conference. Held every other Monday.
Neurosurgery Critical Care Unit Rounds. Held weekly on Thursdays with the neuro-ICU on-call teaching neurosurgeon. Difficult postoperative management problems are discussed. Pathophysiology of relevant conditions and variables such as cerebral ischemia, vasospasm, intracranial pressure, and seizures are reviewed.
Neurosurgery/Neuroradiology Correlation Conference. Held weekly on Thursday, conducted by Dr. William Dillon of the Neuroradiology Department.
Pediatric Neuroradiology/Neurosurgery Conference. Held weekly on Tuesdays, with Drs. Gupta and Barkovich.
Radiosurgery Conference. Held weekly on Thursday, this conference is conducted by Radiation Oncology and Neurological Surgery faculty.
Spinal Radiology/Surgery Conference (Adult). Held twice each month on a Wednesday, this conference is conducted by Drs. Philip Weinstein and Lawrence Pitts of the Neurological Surgery faculty and Dr. William Dillon of the Neuroradiology faculty.
Surgical Anatomy Conference. Held monthly, this session is conducted by Neurosurgery and Neuroanatomy faculty.
Teaching Rounds. Neurosurgery Teaching Rounds are conducted by the teaching neurosurgeons with the resident assigned to the neurosurgeon's patients to discuss case management and review findings. Neuro-Oncology Teaching Rounds, Pain Management Service Rounds, and Interventional Neuroradiology Rounds are conducted with teaching physicians and fellows on these services to review neurosurgical cases and communicate individually with the neurosurgery residents.
San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center
Scheduled teaching rounds are held daily by a teaching neurosurgeon. Each patient's clinical course, laboratory data, and radiologic studies are reviewed and the treatment plan for the next 24 hours is set. Pathophysiology of relevant conditions and such variables as increased intracranial pressure, uncal herniation, and spinal injury are reviewed.
San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Scheduled teaching rounds are held every Monday and Thursday with a teaching neurosurgeon. Patients' histories are presented, patients are examined, and clinicoradiologic correlation is made by reviewing all studies with the neuroradiology staff. Operative intervention is planned if indicated. Brief teaching rounds and a review of consultations are conducted by the teaching neurosurgeon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
